Power Flushing

What is Power Flushing? How is Power Flushing done?

At Weekes Plumbing and Heating, we provide power flushing in Surrey.

Power flushing is using a larger more powerful made for purpose pump to push the dirt and sludge build up out of the heating system. Coupled with a magnetic filter, this can be collected and disposed of.  Combined with specialist chemicals, which help to breakdown stubborn and hard rust and sludge build-up.

There can be a few different symptoms when it comes to diagnosing if you need a power flush or not.

The main symptom we typically see, is cold spots or completely cold radiators. This is caused by sludge build up falling and settling at the bottom of the radiator.

Another symptom can be once your boiler starts to make unusual noises, such as banging and ketteling. This is caused when the Main heat exchanger of the boiler starts to get blocked up with sludge preventing the water from leaving the boiler quick enough, essentially causing it to boil. This can also cause the boiler to show a fault code and lockout.

There are a few different ways to connect a power flushing machine to a heating system.

First, it can be connected in place of the main external central heating system pump. isolating and removing the pump and using special made adapters to connect to the pump valves. This allows best flow through the system, as it allows the power flush pumps flow to follow the normal flow route of the heating system.

Secondly, it can be connected to the valves of a magnetic filter. by isolating the filter and removing it, this allows the power flushing pump to be connected onto the system.

once the power flushing machine is connected, the system can be filled with a mixture of water and chemicals. Then let the mixture circulate through the complete system for roughly 1 hour. After that is complete, the radiators can be isolated at the valves leaving just 1 radiator open at a time. A Specialist hammer drill attachment can be used on the external surface of the radiator, this helps vibrate and break loose any stubborn debris from the inside the radiator. repeat the process until it has been completed on all the radiators.

Finally, starting at the furthest radiator, the water chemical mixture can be ‘dumped’  and flushed whilst be replaced with fresh clean water. Once complete, the heating system pump or magnetic filter can be re installed, refill the system with the correct amount of inhibitor and turn the heating back on.
