# Hive Smart Thermostat Problems & How To Fix Them

A plain-English troubleshooting guide from Gas Safe registered heating engineers — the faults we see most often on Hive systems in Surrey homes, and what actually fixes them.

## Why Hive Faults Are Usually Not The Thermostat

Hive is one of the most common smart heating controls we come across in Surrey homes, and the vast majority of the "Hive is broken" calls we attend turn out to be one of three things: a hub that has lost its internet connection, a radio pairing that has dropped between the hub and the thermostat, or a heating fault that has nothing to do with the controls at all. Genuine thermostat failures are comparatively rare.

That matters because it changes what you should do first. Replacing a thermostat that works perfectly well will not fix a cold radiator, and resetting your router will not clear a sludged-up heating circuit. This guide walks through the faults in the order we check them on site, so you can rule out the free fixes before paying anyone to attend.

A Hive system has three parts that all have to be talking to each other: the **hub** (plugged into your broadband router), the **thermostat** (the unit on the wall or the stand), and the **receiver** (wired at or near your boiler, which is what actually switches the boiler on). Knowing which of the three has failed is most of the diagnosis.

## Quick Fault Finder

Start here. Match the symptom to the likely cause before you change anything, and work from the top of the list down.

Common Hive symptoms and their likely causes

Symptom

Most likely cause

First thing to try

App says thermostat offline

Hub has lost internet or power

Restart the router, then the hub; wait 5 minutes

Thermostat shows 'No Signal'

Radio link to hub lost

Move thermostat nearer the hub and re-pair

Heating won't come on at all

Receiver not switching, or boiler fault

Press the boost button on the receiver at the boiler

Heating on but radiators cold

Air, pump, diverter valve or sludge

Bleed radiators; if no better, book a heating repair

Wrong room temperature shown

Thermostat sited near a draught or heat source

Relocate away from radiators, lamps and doors

Schedule ignoring itself

Holiday mode, geolocation, or a duplicate schedule

Check holiday mode is off and review the schedule

Hot water won't heat

Only applies to cylinder systems; wiring or receiver fault

Confirm the receiver is in a hot water enabled mode

## Fault 1: Hive Offline Or App Not Responding

This is by far the most reported Hive problem, and it is almost always an internet issue rather than a heating one. The tell-tale sign is that the thermostat on the wall still works when you turn the dial — the boiler fires, the house warms — but the app shows the system as offline or refuses to change anything.

### What to check, in order

- Look at the hub's status lights — a solid light means connected, flashing usually means it is searching.
- Confirm the rest of your broadband is working on another device.
- Power the router down for 30 seconds, restart it, and wait until it is fully back up.
- Only then restart the Hive hub, and give it a full five minutes to reconnect.
- Check the ethernet cable between hub and router is properly seated at both ends.
- If your broadband provider recently swapped your router, the hub may need re-adding to the new network.

If the thermostat still controls the boiler manually, your heating system is healthy. Nothing here is a plumbing fault, and you should not need an engineer — this is a connectivity problem between the hub, your router and Hive's servers.

## Fault 2: 'No Signal' Between Thermostat And Hub

The thermostat and the hub talk over a low-power radio link, not over your Wi-Fi. That link is easily weakened by the sort of construction we see a lot of locally — solid Victorian brickwork, foil-backed insulation board in a loft conversion, or a thermostat tucked inside a cupboard next to a metal consumer unit.

Move the thermostat temporarily to the same room as the hub. If the signal returns, the issue is range or obstruction rather than hardware. Permanent fixes include relocating the hub away from the back of a TV cabinet, moving the thermostat out of a cupboard, or repositioning the receiver at the boiler if it is boxed inside a metal-lined enclosure.

If the signal does not return even when the units are side by side, re-pair them. On a Hive Active Heating thermostat that means entering the install menu, choosing to remove the current pairing, and then adding the thermostat back through the app. Batteries are worth ruling out at the same time — a Hive thermostat on tired batteries can hold enough charge to light the screen but not enough to hold a stable radio link.

## Fault 3: Heating Won't Fire Even Though Hive Says It Should

When the app is calling for heat, the thermostat shows a flame symbol, and yet the boiler sits silent, the problem is downstream of the controls. The receiver at the boiler is the component that physically closes the circuit and tells the boiler to fire, and it has a manual boost button on it for exactly this test.

Press the boost on the receiver. If the boiler fires, the receiver and boiler are fine and the fault lies in the signal path from the thermostat. If the boiler stays silent, you have a boiler or wiring fault, and that is the point to stop and call a Gas Safe engineer. Check the boiler's own display for a lockout or fault code first — writing that code down before you ring saves diagnostic time and usually money.

Other quick checks worth doing: confirm the boiler has power and its pressure gauge reads between roughly 1 and 1.5 bar when cold, that the gas supply is on, and that no other gas appliance in the house has also stopped working (which would point to a supply issue rather than a boiler fault). See our [boiler repairs page](/services/boiler-repairs) for how we approach diagnosis.

## Fault 4: The Room Never Reaches The Set Temperature

If Hive is set to 21°C and the house never gets there, the controls are reporting accurately and the heating system is underperforming. The most common reasons we find are cold spots caused by trapped air, radiators clogged with magnetite sludge, thermostatic radiator valves seized shut after a summer of no use, or a boiler that is short-cycling because the system pressure is wrong.

Bleed the radiators, top the system pressure back up if it has dropped, and turn every TRV fully open for an hour to see whether the picture changes. If the bottom of a radiator is hot but the middle stays cold, that is a classic sludge signature and a [powerflush](/services/powerflushing) is the proper fix. Persistent underperformance across the whole house can also mean the boiler is simply undersized for the property.

## Fault 5: Schedules And Geolocation Behaving Oddly

Hive's scheduling is flexible, which also means there are several ways for it to appear broken when it is doing exactly what it was told. Holiday mode left switched on will hold the house at a frost-protect temperature regardless of the schedule. Geolocation can turn the heating off when it thinks the last phone has left the house. And if more than one person in the household edits the schedule from their own account, changes can appear to undo themselves.

- Check holiday mode is off and no end date is set in the future.
- Turn geolocation off temporarily to see whether the schedule behaves.
- Review who has access to the account and agree who manages the schedule.
- Confirm the time zone and clock on the hub are correct after a power cut.
- Remember that 'boost' overrides the schedule for its duration, then hands control back.

## When To Stop Troubleshooting And Call An Engineer

There is a clear line between what is safe to try yourself and what needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. Restarting hubs, bleeding radiators, changing batteries, checking schedules and topping up system pressure are all homeowner tasks. Anything involving the boiler's wiring, the receiver's connections, a persistent lockout code, a smell of gas or repeated pressure loss is not.

If you smell gas, leave the property, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and do not use electrical switches. Do not attempt any of the checks in this guide until the supply has been made safe.

We cover Tadworth, Epsom, Banstead, Sutton, Reigate, Redhill, Dorking, Leatherhead, Cheam, Carshalton, Wallington, Coulsdon, Croydon and Horley, and we are available 24 hours / 7 days a week. Call [07307 219499](tel:+447307219499) and describe what the thermostat, hub and boiler are each doing — that alone often tells us which part has failed before we arrive.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why does my Hive thermostat say 'no signal'?

The thermostat has lost its radio link to the Hive hub. Move the thermostat closer to the hub, check the hub is powered and connected to your router, then re-pair the two. Thick walls, foil-backed insulation and metal consumer units are the usual culprits behind a weak link.

### Why is my Hive app not controlling my heating?

In almost every case the hub has dropped off the internet, not the thermostat. Check the hub's lights, restart your router, then restart the hub. If the thermostat itself still changes the temperature manually, your heating and boiler are fine — it is purely a connectivity fault.

### How do I reset a Hive thermostat?

On a Hive Active Heating thermostat, hold the menu button, scroll to 'Install', enter the installer code (1237 by default), then choose 'Factory Reset'. This clears the pairing, so you will need to re-link the thermostat to your hub afterwards.

### My heating is on but the radiators are cold — is it the Hive?

Unlikely. If the boiler is firing on demand from the thermostat, the fault is in the heating circuit — trapped air, a seized pump, a stuck diverter valve or sludge build-up. A powerflush or a proper heating repair fixes that, not a thermostat swap.

### Can a Hive thermostat be fitted to any boiler?

Hive works with the vast majority of UK combi, system and regular boilers, plus most hot water cylinders. Very old back boilers and some proprietary control systems need a receiver change or a wiring centre alteration first — we confirm compatibility before quoting.

### Do I need a Gas Safe engineer to install a Hive?

For a straightforward like-for-like thermostat swap, no — but any work at the boiler's wiring, or altering how the boiler is controlled, should be carried out by a competent engineer. We are Gas Safe registered and fit smart controls as part of everyday work across Surrey.
